Mrs. Das is encouraged to confide in Mr. Kapasi because he has told her that he works as an “Interpreter of Maladies.” While this job is oral translation for medical patients, she looks on it as more of a counselor. The fact that he is a stranger with whom she will have no further interaction also makes him a safe confidant. As her husband and children are looking around the monastery grounds, Mrs. Das and Mr. Kapasi sit in his car. It is then that she unexpectedly confides in him that Bobby was conceived as the result of a brief affair with another man, her husband’s friend. She also tells him that her husband does not know about the affair or that Bobby has a different father. The reader does not learn if that is really the case or if it is wishful thinking on her part.
