What are the sources of evil and human misfortune in Voltaire's Candide?

The main causes of human suffering and dissatisfaction in Voltaire’s Candide come from a few select sources. The top five are the following: religion, war/violence, nature, sex, and lack of reason/intelligence. These ideas make up the majority of Voltaire's plot, as he uses them to show a pessimistic world.
From the very first chapter, sex is used to create a negative experience for two main characters. Candide is arrested for attempting to kiss Cunegonde when she shows interest in him after hearing Pangloss having sex with a servant. Pangloss is also punished, as he eventually contracts syphilis.
Violence and war are prevalent throughout the story. After being arrested, Candide is forced into conscripted service and engaged in deadly war, which has him witness myriads of people dying. Later in the story, he is attacked, has his provisions stolen by thieves, and is violently accosted by a group of cannibals who wish to eat him.
Religion is perhaps Voltaire’s biggest enemy. The Christian and Jewish characters in power are shown as extremely corrupt and evil, tormenting many other characters directly or indirectly. For instance, the Grand Inquisitor shares Cunegonde as his concubine with a Jewish man, trading off days of the week where they sexually assault her. The one safe haven in the story is El Dorado, which is explicitly devoid of clergy.
Nature plays a part in the tormenting of humanity as well. Voltaire has drawn on his own experiences after having witnessed the earthquake, tsunami, floods, and fires ravage Lisbon in 1755. He uses similar events, as well as powerful storms, to further the plot and harm the characters.
Finally, reason, or a lack thereof, is used to create pain and torture. Voltaire links this idea closely with religion, essentially presenting them as opposites. Once again, the only rational place in the story is El Dorado, and it is the haven and refuge of peace for Candide and his fellow travelers.
