Thesis statement writing can be difficult. They are a combination of needing to be broad enough to give you writing room and needing to be narrow enough to guide the following argument. There are a couple of thesis molds/formats that can be used to help craft a solid thesis. For this particular writing prompt, I would use a double-sided thesis statement. It is composed of a dependent clause that makes one statement, followed by an independent clause that makes a statement that counters the first statement. This kind of thesis works well for your prompt because it will help set up a compare and contrast essay. The prompt says to contrast Emerson's and Thoreau's attitudes on transcendentalism; however, showing differences between them can be tough if readers don't know how the men are similar. It's like asking how someone can know they are happy if they have never experienced sadness. It's easier to show differences after some similarities have been shown. A possible, simple thesis could be similar to the following thesis statement:
"Although Emerson and Thoreau are both transcendentalist writers, there are strong differences between the men and their transcendentalist worldviews."
