Which part of Gregor's life before his transformation leads you to infer that he was miserable?

Gregor Samsa’s misery seems total in The Metamorphosis, but some of the most distressing aspects of that misery come to light as a result of his transformation. While he had human form, Gregor did not enjoy his job. The fact that turning into a bug seems, to him, to have a positive dimension of not being able to work at the job indicates how much he disliked it. After he transforms, his family members’ attitudes show that they had not really appreciated him before. However, he believed that he was truly helping his family and that they needed and valued his financial contributions. It is through transforming that he learns that was not the case and that they had been exploiting him. His family’s behavior toward him afterward emphasizes their lack of concern and affection for him, which certainly indicates a miserable life.
