Globalization is a multifaceted and multidimensional process used to describe the ever-growing interconnection between the world’s economies, cultures, and societies, which happens as a result of the international trade of goods, services, technology, communication, and information. On the upside, globalization can strengthen the economy of less developed countries by modernizing the society and raising the living standard. On the downside, it can have the complete opposite effect in highly developed countries, destroying job opportunities and weakening the economy, as the production and trade of goods and services moves across borders.
Ever since it became a worldwide phenomenon, after the Cold War, globalization has affected all social classes and organizations and numerous other social, political, cultural, economic, geographical, and legal notions and concepts. Thus, globalization has also had a big impact on women and their welfare, especially those living in developing countries. The current wave of globalization has greatly improved the lives of many women all over the world, both as workers and consumers.
However, women still experience problems, inequality, and disadvantages in many areas of life, such as civil and political rights, healthcare, education, and employment, as well as economic and political participation and representation. Fortunately, there are many nations and world organizations which promote equality and operate on a nondiscriminatory policy.
For instance, ever since the advent of globalization in the early 1990s, UNICEF and WHO have been closely monitoring the reduction of maternal mortality, promoting a healthy lifestyle and sanitary conditions. As a result, maternal mortality has decreased by nearly fifty percent worldwide.
Globalization offers women new opportunities in various areas of life, but it also helps with the strengthening of discriminatory policies and agendas and marginalization, which is why it’s difficult to determine which problems are solved by globalization and which problems are caused by it. Thus, many social activists and organizations, and some countries and nations, call upon total elimination of gender discrimination and inequality and promote the provision of better living conditions and security for all women around the world.
