What are the Upanishads?

The Upanishads are a collection of religious and philosophical texts which pertain to the Hindu faith. They were written sometime between 800 BC and 500 BC, at a time when doubts about the traditional Vedic religion were starting to grow more prominent.
The ideas and philosophies behind this new way of thinking were compiled, and this compilation was named the Upanishads. Rather than the external rituals that had dominated religious life up until that point, the Upanishads focus on spirituality that comes from within.
There are 14 Upanishads that are considered to be of particular significance, and each can be read as an individual unit. Each contains the thoughts, experiences, and opinions of one of a myriad thinkers, including men and women. They are considered a great source of Indian philosophy, which seek to inspire rather than to instruct.
