Genghis Khan (1167?–1227) was perhaps one of the greatest military and political leaders in history. His reputation has usually been unfavorable: he conquered many cities, and his foreign enemies wrote unflattering accounts of him.
In the annals of war, Genghis Khan's achievements on the battlefield were matched only by Alexander the Great. Like Alexander, Genghis Khan led from the front and had a vision of what he wanted to accomplish. However, Alexander died after winning his empire, and it did not survive him. In addition, Alexander became king upon the death of his father. Genghis Khan, on the other hand, rose up from a much more humble background; he had the opportunity to show that he could both conquer and govern a vast empire and preserve it for his successors.
Genghis Khan was certainly a man of great ambition, tenacity, perseverance, ruthlessness, flexibility, and tolerance. He built an enormous empire from almost nothing. But we do not know a lot about his early life, or even the year of his birth. Many of the stories about his youth are legendary rather than historical. For instance, it is said that he auspiciously entered the world with a blood clot in his hand. After his father died, his family was destitute for a time. Genghis Khan then showed he was ruthless by killing his half-brother. He won the support of other Mongols by force of personality, adept diplomacy, and military means. He showed he was tolerant by allowing religious freedom in his empire.
Genghis Khan's personality was complex, and he was truly remarkable.
