The Chinese Exclusion Act resulted in Chinese women who were American citizens by birth losing their citizenship. In addition, Chinese women considered to be American citizens were discouraged from marrying foreigners. Any woman who married a foreigner took the nationality of her husband.
Also, Chinese women were stereotyped as prostitutes. For this reason, they had to provide proof that they were not prostitutes, which discouraged them from going to the United States. Furthermore, the wives of Chinese laborers were required to have the necessary certificates to enter the US. Therefore, a woman residing in China was not allowed entry into the US even if her husband was a laborer in the country. Moreover, the wives of laborers, regardless of their occupation before marrying, acquired the status of their husbands after marriage.
