Why does Harry kill Mr. Sing in To Have or Have Not by Ernest Hemingway?

Harry Morgan, the anti-hero of To Have and Have Not, has his own code of conduct based on his own survival. Morgan made a deal with Mr. Sing to carry a dozen undocumented Chinese men on his boat. Morgan does not trust Sing, however. What they are doing is illegal, but if the boat is stopped by authorities, Sing could deny any involvement and put the entire blame onto Morgan. Once the Chinese men are aboard, Sing is a liability. Morgan does not want anyone untrustworthy in a position to betray him so he decides to get rid of Sing. Once he has been paid, Morgan not only kills Sing but secures his ankles with iron weights and throws him overboard so that his body will not be found.
