William Faulkner's 1930 novel is narrated by fifteen characters, many of whom are members of the Bundren family of Mississippi. As the novel opens, Addie Bundren, the family matriarch, is near death. After she dies, the family undertakes a days long journey to bury her in her hometown of Jefferson. There are many misadventures along the way, including floods and a fire, the loss of the family horse, and the broken leg of one of Addie's sons. Her daughter, Dewey Dell, is pregnant and tries to seek assistance in getting an abortion.
Ultimately, the family arrives in Jefferson with Addie's decomposing corpse, and they bury her themselves. One son, Darl, is arrested for arson and institutionalized. Dewey Dell is not able to terminate her pregnancy, and Anse, Addie's widower, gets some new false teeth and remarries to a woman in Jefferson.
