I imagine that you could find many historical episodes and events that provide crucial background information to the Freedom Summer. I do not know how in-depth your paper needs to be, but I will mention some of the major pieces of background information you could consider using.
Since the Freedom Summer was an attempt to register disenfranchised African American voters in Mississippi in 1964, you should include at least a brief mention of the history of black voting rights. This includes the Reconstruction Amendments, particularly the 15th Amendment which guarantees all adult (male) citizens the right to vote regardless of race. Mention how this originated after the Civil War to allow former slaves the ability to participate in American democracy. Of course, being legally permitted to vote did not mean that African American citizens were welcome at the polls. You should include tactics that were used to limit the black vote, such as poll taxes, literacy tests, the grandfather clause, and general intimidation at the polls.
As the Freedom Summer project was organized by the COFO, a conglomerate of several civil action organizations, you could also mention some of the backgrounds of these groups, like the rise of the NAACP and the SNCC. Include their early efforts to organize and improve conditions to encourage and protect African American voters.
I believe that if you paint a picture of the African American voting experience of the century preceding the Freedom Summer, your readers will have a good idea of the context for the movement. Be sure to make it clear that there had been a long history of systemic and legalized barriers to voting in place that continued for generations (and still exists, to a certain extent, today). Then include information about the people and organizations that fought against these barriers and their struggles.
