Ed Kennedy, the nineteen-year-old protagonist and narrator of I Am The Messenger, is in love with Audrey. Ed becomes a cabdriver mostly because Audrey suggests he should give it a go. Ed says that, "It didn't take much to convince me, mainly because I'd been in love with her for years."
Later in the story, Ed says, "I love Audrey something terrible." He also says that Audrey has had sex with lots of people, "but never with me," and this is a source of pain and sadness for Ed. However, Ed also says that "It isn't just sex." He says that he would "want to feel myself mold with her, just for a moment." This implies that he craves a more spiritual, loving connection than can be afforded by sex alone.
A little further into the story, Ed describes his love for Audrey as a "nervous love." He describes it as "nervous" because "sometimes, I don't know what to say." In other words, he is so in love with her that he is rendered speechless, too nervous to say anything. He describes his love for her as "the hunger" which rises in him, and implies that this hunger sometimes overwhelms him and robs him of the capacity to speak when he is around her.
