What were Christopher Columbus's last years like?

Christopher Columbus made four voyages to the New World. His original intention was to sail to Asia by traveling west instead of east. Instead, he came across Caribbean islands and eventually mainland Central America. He did not discover America. He was not even the first European to reach the Americas, as the Vikings had been there centuries before. However, his voyages brought about widespread European exploitation of the New World. He governed the colonies he founded brutally, tyrannically, and incompetently, enslaving Native Americans and causing Spanish colonists to revolt against his rule and that of his brothers.
At the end of his third voyage, Columbus and his brothers were arrested and then imprisoned after their return to Spain. They were freed after several weeks. In his old age, Columbus persuaded King Ferdinand to send him on one more voyage, and this time he made it as far as Panama. However, locals caused him to retreat, and he returned to Spain.
He spent his last years fighting in litigation to obtain the profits and titles he felt were due to him. He eventually received some of the profits but none of the titles. He died on May 20, 1506, in Valladolid, Spain. Most likely he died of severe reactive arthritis, an extremely painful condition.
