In Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Katherine Boo focuses on a poor area of Mumbai, India, which constitutes an “undercity.” By analyzing diverse aspects of the lives of Annawadi residents, Boo emphasizes that it is almost impossible for poor people to get out of poverty. It is very difficult even to leave physically and move to a different area of the city. Beyond the particulars of this singular location, Boo situates the complex situation within the globalized economy. The investments made in Mumbai do not create businesses in such a poor area, and this may result in environmental degradation such as water pollution. Although she includes some benefits of globalization, she argues that those benefits reach only a handful of people and that overall, globalization increases both income disparity and social inequality.
