Rat, or Ratty to his friends, is one of the more positive characters of the story. He can be as stubborn as Badger at times, but his first and foremost goal is to make sure everyone is happy. He cares about his friends a lot, most notably Mole, who he seems to view as more of a brother than a friend. Ratty is helpful and loyal toward all his friends, but he and Mole seem to share a deeper understanding, even if they don't always agree on everything.
Ratty is a river animal, which is something that characterizes nearly everything about him. He loves spending time at the river, but he also longs to get back to it when he's a away. Since it's so vital to him, Rat wishes to include the others in his lifestyle as well, as people often do when they're very passionate about something. He does, however, not hold it against his friends when they don't show the same amount of love for the river as he does. After all, the characters in the novel are animals and prefer the natural habitats of their kind.
When it comes to life in general, Ratty is the most easy-going of the main protagonists. He is not nearly as foolhardy as Toad and not as severely principled as Badger. At times, for example when he lets Toad fool him and escape, Ratty could even be considered a little naive. He is the least likely to start something, but he will follow along dutifully if his help is needed.
