A monologue is used in drama and is when the character directly addresses the audience on their own. In writing a monologue, there are several important things to keep in mind. First of all, it is a good idea to ensure that you know who your character is, and that he or she is well developed. In this particular assignment, you could think about how the girl must be feeling. What emotions would you feel if you felt no one understood you? Frustration? Anger? Despair? You could connect this to the character Jessie's experience in "'Night, Mother." Think about how Jessie hoped and wanted to try and take control of her life by planning her death, and what must have been running through her head at this time. Much of this play is also packed with dark humor, which you could infuse in your monologue as well. If you were Jessie, what would you want the world to know about you?
