The period of time between World War II and the War on Terror has seen an unprecedented evolution of technology. A few key advances have happened: obviously, nuclear warheads were created at the tail end of World War II, but the creation of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM's) has made them far more dangerous, and the United States and the former Soviet Union both established a variety of launch sites that were prepared with numerous nuclear warheads in the event of a nuclear strike.
In addition, stealth fighters, satellite technology, and remote control drone vehicles have been designed, changing the landscape of war completely. Surveillance is available through stealth vehicles and satellites, and drones are able to patrol and engage in combat without risking lives. The escalation of the Cold War created the iconic arms race, but it was not strictly referring to nuclear weapons. Surveillance and stealth technology became much more prevalent due to each nation's propensity for spying on one another.
Since the end of the Cold War and the nuclear arms treaty that has occurred, the United States has taken a much more active role in combating terrorism, extremism, and violent communism.
