President Grover Cleveland (1837–1908) lived a long and eventful life, replete with several interesting facts.
One interesting fact was his rapid ascent to the presidency. In 1881, he was elected mayor of Buffalo. One year later, he became governor of New York. In 1884, he won the presidency as a Democrat. His rise from mayor to governor to president in three years was astounding.
During the presidential election, his opponents attacked him by saying "Ma, ma, where's my pa?" Cleveland had probably fathered an illegitimate child. He was not certain that he was the father, but he gave financial support to the mother.
In 1888, he lost the presidential election. This was significant because he won more popular votes than his opponent, but he lost in the electoral college. (This also occurred in the most recent presidential election.)
In 1892, he won the presidency for the second time. This made him the only president to ever serve two non-consecutive terms.
