Miss Brill normally looks forward to stopping off at the baker's shop on her way home and treating herself to a slice of honey cake. She particularly likes it when she finds an almond in her slice, as she interprets this as a sign of good luck.
But on this particular occasion, after her unpleasant experience at the park, Miss Brill walks straight home without stopping off at the baker's shop. She's so upset and humiliated by the harsh words of the young lady at the park that she just wants to hide herself away from the world as soon as possible.
Besides, if Miss Brill had bought a slice of honey cake and found an almond in it, that would've broken the spell, because then she would've known that it wasn't really a sign of good luck after all. Finding the almond in a slice of honey cake is one of the few things in life that Miss Brill has to live for. The last thing she wants is for that little pleasure to be suddenly snatched away from her, just like the pleasure she once had from spending Sunday afternoons at the park.

Why did Miss Brill pass by the baker's shop that day with out buying the slice of honey cake?
