How is the theme of jazz history explored in Art and Laurie Pepper's Straight Life: The Story of Art Pepper? Please help provide a brief analysis.

Art Pepper was an alto saxophonist who performed with Stan Kenton’s band and several other groups in the 1940s–1950s, so the book sheds light on some key trends in that period. Pepper’s career was so severely derailed, however, by his numerous personal problems that it seemed likely he would never play professionally again, but it resumed in the 1970s, owing in large part to dealing with his addiction. In particular, drug use, including heroin addiction, and related criminal activity led to several periods of incarceration.
His wife, Laurie, played a key role in crafting the autobiography from recorded interviews, interspersed with narratives from former musical associates. Pepper was especially active in California. While Pepper has been widely acclaimed for his originality, he was also an influential figure in West Coast Bebop. When he resumed playing and recording, as well as touring in the United States and abroad, he largely charted his own path rather than meld with any dominant style.
