One could characterize the relationship between Macbeth and his wife as complex and turbulent. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are extremely close and rely on each other to carry out the bloody assassination of King Duncan. Macbeth and his wife trust and encourage each other on their way to becoming king and queen. Macbeth reveals the witches' seemingly favorable prophecies, while Lady Macbeth plots and participates in King Duncan's assassination. The couple seems unstoppable in the first half of the play. However, guilt and ambition create a divide between Macbeth and his wife, and they become more distant and secretive with one another. Lady Macbeth is overwhelmed with guilt over Duncan's murder and slowly begins to lose her mind, while Macbeth becomes increasingly callous and bloodthirsty. By the last act of the play, Macbeth has abandoned his wife, who ends up committing suicide. Throughout the play, Macbeth and his wife are engaged in a complex, turbulent relationship, which dramatically changes after King Duncan's assassination and the dawn of Macbeth's bloody reign.
