Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas was the catalyst to centuries of fighting amongst multiple nations over the resource-rich lands. Many countries laid claim to North American lands, including Great Britain, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and Portugal. Additionally, the Native Americans who originated in these lands fought against the invaders. Spain was the first to arrive on the North American mainland with the establishment of St. Augustine, Florida. Other countries followed suit, with Portugal establishes settlements in Newfoundland and Labrador, France in Louisiana, The Netherlands in New York, and Great Britain along the eastern seaboard.
All nations with colonies and settlements in North American were hungry for the natural resources found on the continent, such as tobacco, cotton, and other agricultural products. Governments also wanted to collect as many high-value resources as possible, such as oil and precious metals. Based on sheer land coverage, Great Britain won the fight for North America, and the country benefited greatly from its exploitation of the land.
