Do you agree with the view that “the tragedy of Oedipus is a story of crime and punishment” where the principal character deserves his fate? Discuss your answers with textual references.

The story of Oedipus Rex is, in my opinion, a story of crime and punishment, wherein the principal character deserves his fate. The entire story is centered around Oedipus causing his own downfall without knowing it, as Tiresias mentions when he says that Oedipus is truly blind. Oedipus's anger and pride bring his downfall, beginning years earlier when he kills a man in rage after being told he is not his "father's son."
His own pride and anger later continue his downfall when he sends out messengers to kill Laius, the previous king, because he believes he still needs to earn his kingdom. In doing so, he eventually learns that he killed Laius, who was his own father, and has married his mother. All of Oedipus's actions lead to his own downfall and destruction, which makes this, in my opinion, a true crime and punishment story.
