A hearty greeting awaits the captain and his crew as they approach the harbor after their long and arduous voyage. In the distance, the speaker can hear the sound of bells ringing out to welcome the ship home. He can also hear the exultant voices of the large crowd that has gathered at the quayside. Many of these people on the shore doubtless have friends and family aboard the ship and will be anxious to see them again after being separated for so long.
As the ship pulls into the harbor, the speaker is keen to rouse the captain, to get him to listen to the bells ringing out to welcome him home—to see the bright colorful flags all fluttering in the breeze in joyful celebration of the ship's safe return. Sadly, the captain is unable to appreciate any of this as he lies "cold and dead" upon the ship's deck.
