As the book opens, Holden is in a mental facility after having a nervous breakdown. He seems a bit angry at his past and at the people in it, as he refers to his childhood as "lousy" and his parents as "touchy as hell." The reader can also infer that something terrible has happened this past Christmas because he refers to an event he calls "madman stuff." Holden does not seem to want to communicate in depth with his audience about the smaller details because he finds that "David Copperfield kind of crap" boring. This statement seems to lead the reader to believe that Holden is a direct, "cut to the chase" character who will not waste the audience's time with insignificant details.
In addition, Holden also seems to hold some resentment against his brother, whom he calls a "prostitute." What Holden means is that he feels his brother has abandoned a serious literary career for the glamour of Hollywood.
The profanity in Holden's language also tells us that he possibly has more anger inside of him yet to be revealed.
