One of the most common ways mindfulness—defined as concentrating one's attention to one's physical and emotional experiences at the present moment—is taught youth and adults alike is through meditation. Breathing exercises are common techniques within the meditation process. This allows the practitioner to be mindful of a process that is usually subconscious, such as breathing. We don't usually think about breathing; we just automatically do it while our consciousness focuses on other things. This also allows participants to be aware of other biological/anatomical mechanisms, like one's heartbeat.
The other way in which mindfulness is taught is by concentrating on external stimuli using the five senses. A teacher may ask students to close their eyes and smell a particular fragrance, like fruit, or she may ask them to close their eyes and listen to the ringing of a bell. This allows participants to eliminate other thoughts in order to singularly focus on a particular stimuli happening in the present moment.
