There's a large rose tree standing near the entrance of the royal garden. As Alice approaches, she can see three gardeners, in the shape of giant playing cards, busily painting the white roses red. Alice finds this a rather curious thing, so she moves closer to get a better look. The gardeners start to bicker among themselves, each one blaming the others for their supposed incompetence. But when they see Alice approach, they suddenly stop arguing and bow down before her.
Alice asks the obvious question: why are the gardeners painting the roses red? The answer is that they put a white rose tree in by mistake, so in order to avoid getting their heads cut off by the Queen of Hearts, they have decided to rectify their error by painting the roses red.
