Personification involves making non-living things seem capable of having emotions and taking actions. Here are two examples of personification in How the García Girls Lost their Accents. One example is when Tia Flor opens her fan and the birds on the fan spread their wings out as if they are alive (5). The birds on the fan seem like they are capable of flying, though they are just pictures. Later, on page 12, as Yolanda is driving through the foothills, she feels a breeze that rustles the branches of the palm trees. As a result, the branches whisper like they are capable of speaking. These examples of personification make the objects seem more vivid, and they add to the color and distinctiveness of the objects.
