"Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution" was a commencement speech Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave at Morehouse College in 1959. It was one of the earliest notable addresses given by Dr. King.
In the address, Dr. King spoke directly to the graduating class of 1959 at Morehouse College, a historically black college in Atlanta, Georgia. The speech came at a time of political, social, and economic crises in the United States. The themes of social and political injustices, African American self-determination, and critique of the US government are present in the address; they would become recurring topics in Dr. King's later speeches.
Dr. King was not only advising the students at Morehouse College; he also used the speech to comment on the larger issues going on in the country and around the world at the time. In the speech, Dr. King advocated for anti-colonial political movements and for instilling "self-respect" in the African American community.
Dr. King also advised the students to replace self-interest with social responsibility. He told the students that solidarity was the only path to social and political progress within the African American community, in particular, and within American society as a whole.
Another recurring theme of Dr. King's speeches throughout his life was the danger of inaction, complacency, and apathy. In this commencement address, he warned the Morehouse College students of the negative consequences of inaction. He closed the speech by reiterating that political apathy—particularly against injustices—affects everyone.
