For your paper, you can start by looking at traditional heroic traits and motivations like strength, a vendetta against evil, and care for others. Then, you can relate those attributes to the heroes in question. Obviously, Beowulf was strong, and he fought valiantly against many of humanity's enemies, like Grendel and his mother, representing his inclination to fight against evil. Further, he cared for Hrothgar and the people of his kingdom, made obvious by his desire to risk himself in the battle against Grendel. Likewise, Gawain was a strong warrior, he fought against evil knights, and he was a champion of chivalry, so they both exemplify the aforementioned traits. Beginning there, you can use the two to help define and describe the idea of a hero.
