“The Smoothest Way Is Full of Stones” is a piece of short fiction written by Julie Orringer. It tells the story of Rebecca, a young Jewish girl. Rebecca is around twelve or thirteen-years-old and lives with her secular parents in Manhattan. After the death of her young sibling, Rebecca is sent to live with her aunt, uncle, and cousin Esty in upstate New York. While living in Manhattan with her secular parents, Rebecca was a carefree and often naughty girl who enjoyed going to the cinema and flirting with boys. But, during her time living with her cousin and her family, she starts to observe the Jewish way of life. She prays, reads the Torah, changes her diet, and starts to abide by other Jewish customs.
