Religion in Virginia is believed to have commenced with the establishment of the Anglican services within Jamestown in 1607. In the year 1619, the Anglican services turned into an established church. Later, other churches, including the Catholic Church and the Methodist Church, were established in Virginia. Religion among the settlers in Virginia was characterized by various ceremonies, including communions, baptisms, and marriages. The marriage between Ann Burrus and John Laydon, in 1608, is believed to be the first religious marriage that was solemnized in Virginia. In the year 1628, an act forbidding marriage without a church license was passed to ensure that more people were recruited into Christianity. Baptism was also an important ceremony among the settlers in Virginia. Children were required to be baptized at birth, and their records were maintained by the Church. Additionally, christening older people had to be done through baptism. Christians were allowed to partake in Holy Communion, which served as a reminder to follow in the way of Christ. These and many other religious undertakings were meant to set the Christians apart from the non-believers. Religion was used by early settlers in Virginia as the main reference point when formulating various state laws and acts.
