One day, Mrs. Hsu took Rose and her other children to the beach. Rose was assigned the task of caring for her brothers, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Bing. Unfortunately, Rose became distracted and took her eye off Bing for a moment. Tragically, the little boy fell into the ocean and was drowned. At the time, Rose's mother was a deeply devout Christian with absolute trust in God. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, her faith still seemed unshakable. The day after Bing was drowned, she returned to the beach, Bible in hand, and asked God to return her son. When this didn't happen, Mrs. Hsu immediately lost her faith. Not only that, but she started using her Bible, previously such a precious possession, to steady the short leg of the kitchen table.
