"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" was written by the American writer and Civil War veteran Ambrose Bierce. Bierce was one of a small group of authors who experienced actual combat in the Civil War. He was a member of the Ninth Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
The story is set during the Civil War and became the best known of Bierce's short stories. It was first published in 1890 in the San Francisco Examiner. In 1891, it appeared in a collection of Bierce's short stories, which was titled Tales of Soldiers and Civilians.
The story is set in northern Alabama and is typical of short stories about the Civil War. These were known for their accurate depictions of the war, the mood it created, and the experiences of soldiers.
