The health risks associated with the different imaging types are assessed as follows:
X-Ray imaging carries an inherent risk due to the nature of ionizing radiation. X-rays are dangerous in significant doses because of the risk for genetic damage or cancer, as the radiation penetrates to the cellular level and can impact DNA. It is advised to use x-rays only when absolutely necessary, to prevent excessive exposure.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is much safer because it uses a strong magnet and the natural resonance of water and soft structures in the body. However, the magnetic field generated during an MRI can harm patients with internal pacemakers and has been known to cause metal to combust in some cases—so jewelry should not be worn while undergoing an MRI.
Gamma ray imaging involves the same risks as x-ray imaging. However, it is more penetrating, which counterintuitively means that it interacts less with the cells and causes less damage. However, in low doses, like you would experience during an imaging procedure, it can cause damage that is more difficult for the cells to correct than when the rays are applied in higher dosages—another counterintuitive concept.

The college will be ordering in medical imaging equipment for use by students and as a resource for teaching. A risk assessment needs to be written, so you have been asked to evaluate the hazards posed by different equipment. Write an evaluation of the hazards of x-rays, ultrasound, gamma cameras and magnetic resonance in medical imaging and explain the control methods used to minimize risks to patients and operating staff.
