Charlie Gordon is a thirty-two-year-old, intellectually-disabled man who works at Donner's Bakery and attends adult literacy classes at Beekman College Center for Retarded Adults. Charlie Gordon is depicted as a kind, sympathetic man who is determined to become intelligent and desperately wishes to gain the approval of his coworkers. Sadly, Charlie is taken advantage of by his coworkers and does not realize that they ridicule him on a daily basis until he becomes intelligent.
Before undergoing experimental surgery, Charlie is a trusting, friendly man who is innocent and likable. As the novel progresses, Charlie undergoes an experimental procedure and his intelligence dramatically increases. As Charlie becomes more intelligent, he begins to experience traumatic memories, and the reader learns about his abusive, unsettling childhood. Charlie also learns that he can never fully escape his former self before his intelligence rapidly declines.
Fortunately, Charlie Gordon recognizes his self-worth and forgives his family members before reverting back to his intellectually disabled self.
