What are the mood and conflict of The Red Bandanna?

The biographical story The Red Bandanna is a somber but grateful celebration and remembrance of the life of Welles Crowther, a young man who gave his life saving others during the attacks on September 11th. The mood of the book is very somber, but it is interjected with stories of laughter and joy, as well as details of the man’s personal life and journey to where he was that day. The novel stresses the gratitude that the survivors feel for the sacrifice Crowther made that day.
The main conflict is hard to define because it is not a strict good versus evil conflict, but more of a man versus nature or man versus disaster sort of conflict. Crowther decides to brave the destruction of the World Trade Centers to help others survive, and the primary conflict is his struggle to help others to safety. Ultimately, he succeeds in helping others but perishes in the wreckage.
