The textile industry in the Indian subcontinent can be dated to as early as 3,000 BCE. During this early period, the textile industry operated under royal patronage. However, the designs most associated with Indian textiles originated in the early sixteenth century, drawing their inspiration from nature and featuring floral motifs.
In the design and production of jewelry, royal patronage was—again—key. The use of jewelry for decoration and spiritual purposes extends as far back as the textile industry on the subcontinent. However, beginning in the sixteenth century, during the age of the Mughal Empire, contemporary patterns and designs began to emerge. Frequent use of polychrome jewelry was the result of the strength of the pearl-diving industry and the large volume of deposits of precious stones in India, Sri Lanka, and Burma. Large amounts of gold also feature in traditional Indian jewelry design.
