After the death of his mistress Alberta in childbirth, Troy is determined to hold on to everything that belongs to him, including his illegitimate daughter. Unfortunately this newfound resolve doesn't appear to extend to his own wife, Rose, whom he continues to alienate by his selfish behavior.
When Troy comes home from the hospital with his daughter, he has the audacity to ask Rose to take care of her. As we can imagine, Rose is not best pleased with this outrageous request, and flat out refuses to oblige. Not unreasonably, she doesn't see why she should have to look after a child that her husband has fathered with another woman. But Troy pleads with Rose to change her mind; the child is innocent in all of this; she hasn't done anything wrong. Eventually, Rose agrees to take care of the baby, but she won't accept Troy, not after his blatant infidelity.
