The mood of the poem is one of detached indifference. A grain of sand, like all features of sand, neither knows nor cares what name we choose to give it. It exists by itself just fine, without our needing to say anything about it at all. By nature's own lights, there are no such things as skies, lakes, and waves. For in nature, there are no names. Nature just is, lying before us as we try and capture it with our words.
But as we struggle to give an artificial identity to what we see, feel, and hear, nature remains sublimely indifferent to our efforts. It goes on, much as it always has, long before we first arrived on this planet and possibly long after we've left it.
