Stephen Hawking was an English cosmologist and theoretical physicist. Hawking also published numerous science-themed books and articles. Some of Hawking's most well-known works are A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes, The Universe in a Nutshell, On the Shoulders of Giants, and Brief Answers to the Big Questions. Many of Hawking's books became bestsellers and received critical acclaim from peers in academia and the general public. Hawking's books, articles, and lectures had a profound influence on the growth of the "popular science" genre.
Besides Hawking's literary output, he was also the director of the research department at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. Prior to his role at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology, Stephen Hawking was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge for 30 years. Stephen Hawing collaborated with English mathematician and physicist Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems, which contributed significantly to general relativity. Hawking predicted that black holes emit radiation, which later became known as Hawking radiation.
In popular culture, Hawking became associated with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig's disease, which left Hawking mostly paralyzed and dependent on a speech-generating device to communicate. Stephen Hawking died on March 14, 2018.
