Opal helps Gloria set up the party, which will be held in the backyard. Miss Franny Block, the first guest to arrive, brings a bowl of Litmus Lozenges for after dinner. Sweetie Pie wanted to contribute to the decorations and decided on dogs as the theme. She brought a lot of dog photographs, which she had cut out of magazines, and went around taping them up on trees in the yard. Last to arrive is Otis, with Gertrude on his shoulder. Otis brings his guitar to play and a huge jar of dill pickles—the “biggest jar” Opal had ever seen. Shy about joining the party, Otis nervously repeats that he brought pickles. When the thunderstorm starts, they quickly move all the food inside, and Sweetie Pie pulls down the dog pictures to save them.
