"Visitors, 1965" by Oscar Hijuelos
In the short story “Visitors 1965”, Hijuelo portray Hector as a young Cuban immigrant who struggles to accept the status of his family in the United States, which is in contrast to his extended family. His father Alejo, filled with so much pride made it known that he was the first member of his family to travel to the United States, despite the fact that he had the same job and the same pay for a period of 20 years. On the other hand, Hector’s cousin, Pedro managed to get a job, owned a house, moved to Miami and also managed to afford other luxuries. This is a clear indication that the relationship between the United States and the Cuban immigrants had numerous fluctuations that led to different levels of hardships, thus contributing to some Cuban immigrants resenting those that emerged as successful. For instance, Mercedes who is Alejo’s wife bemoans her sister’s financial stability, luxuries such as a colored television, and a house by saying “This country’s wonderful to new Cubans. They’re going to have everything, and we…what will we have?” (2)
In addition, Hector and Mercedes experience inferiority complex and frustration due to the success of their friends, family and fellow statesmen, who followed them to the United States. Despite of Hector and his family being separated from other family members for years, their reunion in the United States was not always as happy or as blissful as it would be expected. This is because the American people did not treat them equally as compatriots and so the bond between countrymen diminished.
"Visitors, 1965" is a short story about Cuban immigrants and the different attitudes and views they have about their new life in the United States and their old home in Cuba. Hector, the main character, struggles to come to terms with the move and his family's immigrant status. He despises being "Americanized" and revels in memories of Cuba. Alejo, Hector's Father, is proud of their successful journey to the United States, as he is the first in his family to make it. Horacio is the second son of Alejo. Pedro, Hector's cousin, seems to have obtained a part of the American Dream by attaining a stable job, and is thus able to afford his own home and other small luxuries. Pedro is part of the generation of "new" Cuban exiles who emigrate from Cuba, following Alejo's generation. This frustrates Hector and his family, as the new wave of Cuban immigrants appear to fare better in a shorter time than the "old" Cuban exiles.
This short story delves into the political unrest and tension-filled relationship between the United States and Cuba; families were forced to leave Cuba during the political unrest that resulted from Communism being introduced on the island in the early 1800's. Each generation faces different struggles as American opinions of Cuba change over time. This story therefore follows how the American/Cuban political relationship impacted the material realities of immigrants.
