Calvin Coolidge was a Republican. He became the 30th president of the United States in 1923. When he was serving as vice president under Warren G. Harding, Harding unexpectedly died from a heart attack, and Coolidge took on his role as president.
During his presidency, Coolidge cleaned up the corruption that existed under Harding while leading the nation through the roaring twenties. He quickly became popular with the American people, as he modeled stability and respectability. He favored a frugal lifestyle during a time when most Americans were spending lavishly. As president, Coolidge had laissez-faire policies and favored tax cuts and limited government spending. His main goal as president was to return to normalcy, meaning bringing the country back to the place it was before World War I.
