Initially, Sanger Rainsford and Whitney desire to hunt and kill jaguars in the Amazon rainforest at the beginning of the story. Unfortunately, Rainsford accidentally falls into the sea and ends up swimming towards Ship-Trap Island, where he meets the maniacal General Zaroff shortly after coming ashore. General Zaroff proceeds to tell Rainsford that he hunts humans on his island because he considers them to be admirable opponents and the most dangerous game.
At this point in the story, Rainsford desires to leave the island but is faced with the problem of surviving the armed Zaroff, his hostile servant, and his pack of skilled hunting dogs. General Zaroff wishes to hunt Rainsford for three consecutive days throughout Ship-Trap Island and believes that Rainsford will be a fierce competitor. During the three days, Rainsford struggles to compose himself in order to think clearly and successfully evade General Zaroff. Rainsford also struggles to overcome the treacherous terrain and sea over the course of three days.
