Who is Tabaqui, and what role does he play in the story in The Jungle Book?

Tabaqui is a jackal that plays the role of a villain. He is always out to make mischief and discredit those that are trying to do good. Apart from Shere Khan, he is the most disliked animal in the jungle. The wolf pack despises him because he does not work hard for his food. He rudely interrupts the wolves as they are preparing to hunt and asks for something to eat. When he is told that there is nothing, he boldly walks into the cave and starts licking a bone.

Even though Tabaqui is 'lazy', the other animals in the jungle 'fear' him because he can be very unpredictable. He could easily turn mad and start biting every animal. Surprisingly, even the great Shere Khan feared this behavior.

According to the laws of the jungle, any animal that shows madness is a disgrace and an embarrassment. As a result, the other animals always tried their best to stay away from Tabaqui.

Tabaqui is the golden jackal from the jungle who is Shere Khan's only companion. His role is to serve as Shere Khan's spy as well as his go-between with other jungle creatures. His other role, in the literary sense, is as a foil (or opposite) of the more admirable animals in the jungle. He is not popular with either humans or animals. Shere Khan also does not treat him well, sometimes beating him.
Tabaqui is a scavenger who lives on scraps of meat hunted and killed either by Shere Khan or the Seeonee Pack wolves. The wolves dislike him because he is always looking for food, is devious, and has a bad temper. However, the animals feel sorry for him, even if they find his behavior irritating.
The wolf named Grey Brother kills Tabaqui after forcing him to reveal what Shere Khan's plans are. Grey Brother manages the murder by crushing the jackal's back.
