George W. Bush was a member of the Texas Air National Guard for the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1974. He joined the 147th Fighter Interceptor Group on May 27, 1968. He served two years of active duty service, and then another four years of part-time duty. He was honorably discharged in 1974 with a rank of First Lieutenant. When he ran for president, a controversy erupted over whether he fulfilled his military obligations. It became public that he lost his flight status in 1972 for failing to meet physical examination requirements for pilots. Prior to that, he failed to meet attendance requirements, but he did have all the required flight hours logged. An investigation into his military records indicated that he did not meet the required obligations to fulfill his service.
