In Ivan Turgenev’s story, the doctor becomes fascinated with Alexandra’s case even before he develops a personal interest in the young woman herself. He wants desperately to cure her and is puzzled that, while her health does not improve , she stays alive. The doctor shows a combined personal and professional concern for this desperately ill young woman. He does not fall in love with her. As he stays by her side and listens to her, he realizes that she desires more than anything to feel love once in her life so that she can slip away and die in peace. The doctor does not tell her he does not really love her, because his goal is not to burst her bubble. Instead, once he has determined that she cannot recover, he wants to help her ease out of life.
