Jo looked down at his own abdomen and said wistfully: "Wisht Ah had a build on me lak he got. He ain't puzzlegutted, honey. He jes' got a corperation. Dat make 'm look lak a rich white man. All rich mens is got some belly on 'em."
In this first quotation, Jo first reveals his ambition to be wealthy like Otis D. Slemmons. Slemmons's large stomach is considered a sign of his wealth. Jo points out that he looks, in this way, just like "a rich white man." Jo wishes that he could have the same big stomach, because that would mean that he, too, was rich.
"Oh Joe, honey, he said he wuz gointer give me dat gold money and he jes' kept on after me—"
This second quotation is spoken by Jo's wife, Missie May. Jo has just discovered his wife in bed with the aforementioned Slemmons. Missie May here says that she slept with Slemmons for the "gold money" that he promised her in return. She did this for Jo, because he seemed to want so much to be rich like Slemmons. In this way, ambition destroys Jo and Missie May's relationship. After this point their relationship becomes fractured, whereas before it was joyful and loving.
. . . the yellow coin in his trousers was like a monster hiding in the cave of his pockets to destroy her.
In this third quotation the narrator describes the gold coin in Jo's pocket as "like a monster." This gold coin is what Jo took from Slemmons, and since Jo took the coin, he has become a different person. The coin is symbolic of the ambition—specifically, Jo's ambition, which has destroyed the simple and joyful love that Jo and Missie May once had. It has devoured them, metaphorically, as a monster might devour its victims.
