In the opening scene of An Invisible Thread, a young white-collar worker named Laura encounters a boy named Maurice begging on the street. She takes him to McDonald's, where he tells her that he lives in the projects near her. She sympathizes and gives him her business card, but he rebuffs her offer for help.
In the following days, Laura wonders how Maurice is faring. She finds him on the same corner and begins a routine of taking him to lunch every week. She begins to buy him enough food to take home for his family. Meanwhile, her coworkers become concerned about her new friend. It is revealed that Laura is especially sympathetic to Maurice because she grew up with a father who abused drugs and beat his wife.
One day, Laura decides to invite Maurice into her home for dinner. She learns that he has never eaten at home before. She offers to give him a lunch to take to school and agrees, upon his request, to attend his parent-teacher conferences. His teacher, Kim, states that Maurice has had few support figures in his life, compelling Laura to continue helping him.
One day, Laura goes to Maurice's house to obtain a signature for a permission slip. She learns that his mother is a drug addict; he is raised instead by his grandmother Rose. That winter, Laura's mother falls ill with cancer, causing the return of her abusive father, Nunzie. Laura is forced to deal with the return of her traumatic memories.
When Maurice is sixteen, his father, Morris, comes back to the projects and is dying of AIDS. He wishes to apologize to his family; Laura helps Maurice forgive him. Around this time, she starts a relationship with a man named Michael. She moves out of the city but frequently returns to see Maurice, and she eventually finds finding that he is back out on the streets because his mother lost the apartment. When the two communicate via letter, Maurice omits key details, including the fact that he has moved to North Carolina and gotten a girl pregnant. The two lose contact for a year, until Laura's marriage ends and Maurice moves back to take care of his dying mother.
At the book's conclusion, Maurice owns a successful construction business and has five kids. He and Laura are thankful that they met each other and helped improve the outcomes of each other's lives.
